Earlier in November, soon after the PCX 125 was launched in Europe, we started hearing rumours regarding Honda introducing an all-new PCX 160 scooter for 2021. Well, Honda Japan just pulled the cover off not just one but three new PCX models for the Japanese domestic market. The newly introduced models for 2021 are; PCX, PCX 160 and PCX e:HEV (PCX Hybrid). With these models, Honda has completely redesigned everything from the bodywork and features to the engine.
Starting with the design, the new PCX range follows the design of the recently launched European PCX 125 model. Upfront, the front has been facelifted while the side and rear profile remain fairly similar to the ongoing PCX model.
In Japan, the first model, the standard PCX (aka PCX 125 in Europe) is powered by a water-cooled 124cc single-cylinder engine which comes equipped with Honda’s eSP+ technology to ensure engine performance and fuel efficiency. The new PCX range also gets Honda Selectable Torque Control / Traction Control and disc brakes at the front and rear with ABS (1-channel) as standard. Honda says the storage space has been further expanded from 28L to 30L and now the model comes with a USB type C charging socket to charge electronic devices such as smartphones. The instrument panel has also been updated on the new PCX range.
The all-new PCX 160 is based on the standard PCX and shares similar features. However, unlike the standard PCX, the PCX 160 features an all-new water-cooled 4-stroke 156cc single-cylinder engine. So would Honda revise the engine displacement of the Honda PCX 150 that’s offered in other markets? Well, we think Honda “might” replace the current PCX 150 with the PCX 160 in certain markets but only time would tell.
In the case of the new PCX e: HEV (aka PCX Hybrid in other markets); the hybrid scooter is powered by a water-cooled 124cc single-cylinder engine with ACG Motor assist. Honda says the new 124cc engine with eSP+ and the ACG Motor assist with a high-power lithium-ion battery further refines the low-end torque of the new PCX Hybrid. In the case of Malaysia, the PCX Hybrid that’s currently offered here uses a similar Hybrid system but it is coupled to a larger 149.3 cc engine. So for Malaysia, if BSH decides to update the model, it would mainly be around the design. However, a 156cc mill replacing the current 149.3cc mill is also a possibility.
